Making food fresh again: tips & tricks

Did you know that the rock-hard bread and the limp salad are not for the trash? But that doesn't mean that you have to sink your teeth into the roll from the day before yesterday or force down the soft, sad lettuce leaf.
Because: we have prepared some tips for you with which you can make your supposedly old food fresh again! As you may know, we are fighters against food waste and are always happy to make new allies. 😉

The best thing about the fight against food waste: In addition to the resource-saving aspect, there is also the financial aspect. Not throwing away food that is actually good just because it no longer looks as fresh as the day you bought it can save you a lot of money. Foods like carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, bread and many more, as you will learn in this article, can easily be brought back into top shape at home.

Well, there we have the salad

Such a crisp, fresh lettuce leaf looks great on a burger, a bun or as a mixed salad with other ingredients and a creamy dressing. But after just two days in the fridge, the leaves usually no longer look particularly appetizing.

Here's how you can give the salad some bite back:
Simply place the wilted head of lettuce in a bowl of cold water and add a tablespoon of sugar per liter of water.
Tada, almost 20 minutes later you have crisp, fresh lettuce leaves again. And don't worry, they won't taste like sugar.
Be sure to remove any muddy parts or leaves beforehand - unfortunately they can no longer be saved.

Attention: For lamb's lettuce , it is better to use lukewarm water and let the leaves float in it for about 30 minutes . Finally, it's best to rinse them off with cold water.

A tough cookie

Crispy on the outside, juicy and soft on the inside: that's how we love our rolls. It's a shame that too often we end up eating the same bread roll the day after going to the bakery.🥴

There are also some tips and tricks here.

For example, you can cut the dry bread into slices and sprinkle a little water with a teaspoon or brush. Then the slices are placed on a baking tray and baked in a preheated oven at 180 degrees for a few minutes . The same works with rolls or baguettes - simply brush them with water , or hold them under running water for a second or two and place them in the oven. In this case, the rolls can bake a little longer, about 10 minutes.

Don't have an oven? We have three more options ready.😎

Steam bath:
Bring some water to the boil in a pot and place the bread over it for 5 to 10 minutes - for example in a sieve or a fine-mesh pan splash guard. The steam makes the hard bread soft and edible again.

Practical and energy-saving: with the toaster .
Simply place the rolls on the baking device of your toaster, select the highest temperature and let them bake for about two to three minutes . Then you turn them over and let them bake on the other side for just as long. Et voila, crispy rolls, without an oven!

You can also use the toaster to make individual slices that have become hard edible again. To do this, you can simply moisten the slices slightly before toasting.

And last but not least, the magic microwave :
The same applies here: moisten slices of bread with water. You can also wrap rolls or a loaf of bread with damp kitchen paper. Then place the bread in slices on a plate over medium
Microwave for about 30 to 60 seconds and place the wrapped rolls or loaf of bread at 700 - 900 watts for 10 to 20 seconds .

The oven and microwave are also suitable for making pretzels!
In this case, you can either bake them in the oven at 160 degrees for 7 - 8 minutes (also works without preheating), or in the microwave for 10 to 15 seconds at the highest level.

Don't be a faithless tomato

Simply give new life and cut resistance to the softened tomato. Tomatoes, zucchini, carrots, parsnips, potatoes and radishes that have shriveled or become soft are not waste. Did you know that even if they
no longer look so fresh, still contain all the valuable vitamins ?

To refresh them, you can simply place these foods in a bowl of water in the refrigerator for 10 to 12 hours , for example overnight.

This means they can soak up the missing liquid through their surface and immediately look fresh and crisp again, like they did on the first day.

Pro tip for radish lovers: Store them in the fridge in slightly salty water and they will last even a few days longer.

For zucchini and tomatoes , it may be enough to just place them in very cold water for around 15 minutes .
Try it out!

There are also tricks for kohlrabi and cauliflower . You can revive this vegetable by placing it in lukewarm water for a few minutes and then in very cold water.
