Impact Facts about Veganuary

Save the world through a vegan diet? We'll show you the enormous impact you can achieve with a vegan diet.

It's time again for your New Year's resolution. We all know the classics: eat less sugar, go to the gym more often, procrastinate less. But have you ever had the idea of going vegan for a month?

Since 2014, the non-profit organization 'Veganuary' has been making this possible. Through social media, newsletters and official brand partnerships, Veganuary supports its participants and promotes more sustainable living. In fact, over the last 8 years, over 2 million people have chosen to avoid animal products for the entire month of January.

The reason for this? Well, there are thousands, because an animal-free diet is not only good for animals, but also the environment, health and people. In this blog article we take a closer look at the ecological benefits of Veganuary and discover what you could achieve with it in just one month.

IMPACT: SAVE WATER

Using calculations by Poore & Nemecek (2018), Veganuary has calculated that the 2 million participants have been able to save a total of 12.4 million liters of water by changing their diet since the start.

When we compare the water consumption in producing beef with that of plant-based alternatives, it is always surprising how big the difference is. 100g of pea protein, which we use in our GREENFORCE products, only requires 178L of water , compared to 1,375L for the same amount of beef protein.

Over 600,000 people have already registered for Veganuary 2022, but significantly more are expected this year. So you can imagine how much water can be saved overall.

Impact: Protect our waters

With Veganuary you can also save water in another way. A vegan diet helps reduce phosphate emissions . Previous Veganuary participants were able to save around 810 tons by switching to plant-based foods, according to calculations by Poore & Nemecek .

Excessive phosphate emissions are absolutely critical for the climate. When too many phosphates flow into our waterways, it leads to increased levels of nitrogen and phosphorus, which ultimately harms the animals and plants in the water . Since legumes can bind nitrogen from the air , they do not need mineral fertilizers - which means less phosphorus and nitrogen end up in our waters .

Impact: More sustainable land use

We can also save arable land through a plant-based diet. And much, much less: We calculated that 100 g of pea protein requires 4.7 football fields of land. In comparison, the same amount of beef protein requires 228 football fields. That's 48 times less land for the same protein content .

It is also important to note that the production of organic meat, milk and eggs requires even more land than conventional farming . This often causes more deforestation . So if you pay attention to the well-being of animals, our forests suffer. It's an eternal cycle.

Impact: Less greenhouse gas emissions

Now we come to our final point, but there are many more benefits we get from plant-based diets.

According to figures from Veganuary, 207,680 tons of CO2 have already been saved since the beginning of Vegan Month. This corresponds to 1 million flights between Munich and Paris . 😱

We have also made similar calculations ourselves: If everyone in Germany replaced a single meat meal with a plant-based one once a week , around 50 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions could be saved . This corresponds to 6 times the annual consumption of the city of Munich . And if we only go without once a week: imagine what we could achieve with a complete switch to a vegan diet.

And let's not forget the animals themselves: So far, the lives of 6.7 million animals have been saved . 💚

Now we've learned how big a difference a vegan diet can have on the planet. And plant-based eating is so much fun: During Veganuary you have the opportunity to discover many new products and cuisines , make new friends and change your daily routine in an exciting way.

We are a proud partner of Veganuary 2023 and are really looking forward to you joining us on the journey.
